Alice’s Story

"Recovery is about getting my true self back, and trusting the process"

Alice's journey through recovery has been transformative, marked by newfound self-confidence and a sense of belonging. Her experience highlights the profound impact of structured support and community in overcoming alcohol and drug use.

Recovery Journey:

At Moving On Inverclyde, Alice participated in the Phase 2 group, a pivotal part of their 26-week, four-phase recovery programme. This phase focuses on developing recovery skills and personal resilience through group work and one-on-one sessions. Alice learned to build self-confidence and felt truly listened to, experiences she hadn't encountered before in her recovery journey.

A particularly impactful moment for Alice was when the group facilitator shared his personal lived experience. This openness made her feel seen and not judged, fostering a sense of community among individuals recovering together.

Challenges and Insights:

Alice cautions that it's easy to revert to old habits due to the temporary 'fun' or stress relief substances can provide. She emphasizes that these struggles do not discriminate, and can affect anyone.

When asked what recovery means to her, Alice stated, “It’s about getting my true self back.” She acknowledged that while the beginning of recovery can be daunting, it's a necessary leap for personal well-being. The tools and resources provided at Moving On, along with SMART recovery techniques, were crucial in helping her navigate moments of doubt and prevent relapse.

Advice for Others:

For women embarking on their recovery journey, Alice advises, "Trust the process." She encourages exploring all available resources to discover what works best for each individual. She also emphasizes the importance of not feeling ashamed, noting that at Moving On, everyone is part of a supportive team, helping each other through every step of the journey.
